They hope their salvation will lie in Spanish U21 star Victor Camarasa, with reports in the Daily Mirror suggesting his club side Levante may be willing to discuss a deal.

It is thought the north east giants would need to part with about £5 million to secure a deal, though they face stiff competition for his signature from Seville and a number of Serie A clubs.

20 year old Camarasa has come through the ranks at Levante, and although he has only made 12 appearances for the senior team, the Spanish press are of the belief he could become a major star.

He has one appearance for the Spanish U21 side.
