5) Ligue 1

Paris Saint-Germain may be through against Chelsea and AS Monaco look certain to follow against Arsenal, but you wouldn’t exactly bet on either side winning the competition. Despite some big investments in recent times, both teams have some catching up to do to get up to Europe’s elite.

4) Serie A

Not what it used to be, Serie A teams have done precious little in the Champions League in recent years, with Juventus their only representatives in this season’s competition.

3) Premier League

Despite dominating this competition in the mid to late noughties, Chelsea’s exit last night following poor first leg results for Arsenal and Manchester City surely means the Premier League just isn’t up there as the best league in the world anymore.

2) La Liga

With Real Madrid winning an all-Spanish final in the competition last season and joined by Barcelona as among the favourites to win it this season, La Liga is undoubtedly a force in the game at the moment, despite often being criticised for being weak outside the top two.

1) Bundesliga

After Bayern Munich’s thumping 7-0 win over Shakhtar Donetsk, Pep Guardiola’s side may now be favourites to conquer Europe this season, with the Bundesliga looking generally strong with Schalke giving Real Madrid a real scare and mid-table strugglers Borussia Dortmund still contenders to win the whole thing.
