Gerrard was given a red card for stamping on Ander Herrera less than 60 seconds after he came on to the pitch at the start of the second half, and the Reds went on to lose the game 1-2. However, Skrtel appeared to also stamp on David De Gea in the dying minutes, and Jones only got a yellow for a heavy challenge on Jordan Henderson.

On Skrtel the ex-official said: “If Atkinson had seen the incident during the game, there’s no doubt that Skrtel would have been sent off.”

He added on Jones: “Another player also fortunate to escape a red card at Anfield was Phil Jones, who only received a caution for a tackle on Jordan Henderson that was reckless, used excessive force and endangered the player’s safety.”
