The £59.7 million winger was given the hairdryer treatment by the no nonsense Red Devils manager Louis van Gaal after a poor showing as a substitute in their 2-1 win over Liverpool at Anfield last Sunday according to the Sun.

The former Real Madrid man was apparently displeased at his Dutch manager’s vociferous negative opinion of his performance, throwing his Old Trafford future into doubt once again after a poor first season in the Premier League.

When talking to the press, it is thought van Gaal was referencing Di Maria in saying, “When we don’t have the ball, we don’t press the opponent with the ball and that was different.”

The Argentine player scored three goals in his first five outings in a United shirt, but has only netted once since and has been sacrificed early in favour of substitutes in recent performances. He was also sent off in the FA Cup home defeat to Arsenal, for grabbing referee Michael Oliver.

Despite the intense speculation and criticism, sources close to the Manchester United player say he is determined to turn his career at the club around.
