The 24-year-old had only been called in to the squad to replace Manchester United youngster Luke Shaw, who had himself withdrawn from England’s party on the weekend.

National team manager Roy Hodgson has decided to not call up a replacement for the Spurs man, according to the Press Association. This will disappoint Southampton’s Ryan Bertrand and West Ham’s Aaron Cresswell, who would have been favourites to be called up as potential late replacements.

This news shouldn’t be huge setback for the Three Lions, who play a Euro 2016 qualifier against Lithuania at Wembley on Friday.

The game could see highly rated 21-year-old Harry Kane make his debut for his country.
