The French international has been in superb form for the Saints this season, and despite long being linked as a top target for the Gunners, it could be that Old Trafford will end up being his next destination.

Here are four reasons this transfer makes sense and surely will happen this summer:

1) Man United need a midfielder

It’s clearly been a weakness identified by Louis van Gaal since he joined the club – Manchester United need a new signing in midfield. So many big names have been linked with moves to Old Trafford since then, and Schneiderlin is as good as any of them.

2) Schneiderlin suits their style

As well as simply being a top class midfielder – one of the finest in the Premier League this season, in fact, – Schneiderlin also suits United’s style of play perfectly. The 25-year-old has been playing in an attack-minded, technically gifted side that have performed beyond expectations under Ronald Koeman this season, and moving to United should prove a smooth transition in that aspect. He also bossed the game as the Saints won 1-0 at United earlier this season, out-performing those he’ll hope to get into the team ahead of next season.

3) United should get Champions League football

Schneiderlin has been quoted as saying he wants Champions League football. Despite their great season, Southampton are not going to quite do enough to make it, but United’s win over Liverpool last week puts them in a terrific position to get back into the top four, which should help them in their bid to sign the £25m-rated star.

4) Arsenal eyeing Khedira instead

We all know Arsenal like a bargain if they can get one, and other reports today suggest they are in a good position to sign Real Madrid contract rebel Sami Khedira this summer, with the German international available on a free. With Schneiderlin likely to cost £25m, Arsene Wenger will surely move for Khedira instead now, leaving United as the leading contenders to snap up the Southampton man.
