Beria’s season came to an end against AS Saint-Etienne when he limped off in the early stages of the campaign. The versatile defender ruptured the lateral ligament and the anterior ligament in his right knee and was forced to undergo an operation.

While the procedure went well, the 31-year-old will miss the rest of the season as he recuperates. All in all, Beria is set for six months on the sidelines—a reality which will likely delay his participation next term.

However, with disaster comes opportunity, and his injury gives 22-year-old Sidibe the chance to impress.

The versatile Senegalese defender is primarily a right-back, but he has emerged as something of a utility player for Les Dogues and has played in both full-back position, the centre of defence and in midfield since moving from Troyes in 2012.

“It’s true that I have the opportunity to play,” he began, speaking to L’Equipe, “now, I must first of all concentrate on trying to give the maximum.

“First, in defending well. If I can contribute offensively, then I’ll do it.”
