We’re sure plenty of Reds fans would also like to see their side sign Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez, but it doesn’t mean that it’s going to happen. In the list below, we count down ten far more realistic targets…

10) Jan Vertonghen (Tottenham Hotspur)

The Belgian has been in and out of the Spurs team under Mauricio Pochettino, although survived rumours linking him with a move away from the club in January. A solid and versatile option on the left who could provide Brendan Rodgers with a useful option at the back.

9) Petr Cech (Chelsea)

The long-time Blues goalkeeper was linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge last summer, but decided to stay put and play second fiddle to Thibaut Courtois. He would provide strong competition for Simon Mignolet, and could well be keen on a move to Anfield in the coming months.

8) Yohan Cabaye (Paris Saint Germain)

The Frenchman has been struggling to hold-down a first-team place in the French capital so far this season, but would still make a quality signing for the vast majority of Premier League clubs. A solid potential replacement for the Reds departing captain Steven Gerrard.

7) Demba Ba (Besiktas)

Something of a villain at Anfield following his exploits for Chelsea last season, but a striker capable of grabbing goals on a regular basis, and filling the shoes left by any potential striker exits. He’s definitely wasted out in Turkey, having scored 20 goals so far this season.

6) Henrikh Mkhitaryan (Borussia Dortmund)

A potential victim of Dortmund’s indifferent domestic season. The Armenian has only scored three goals in all competitions so far this season, and is the creative attacking type that Brendan Rodgers loves to have. He’d be added competition for the likes of Adam Lallana.

5) Memphis Depay (PSV Eindhoven)

Manchester United are believed to be firm favourites for the Dutchman, who is expected to leave PSV at the end of the season, but considering his age and massive potential there’s no reason why the Reds shouldn’t push the boat out for the 2014 World Cup star.

4) Christoph Kramer (Bayer Leverkusen)

The 24-year-old World Cup winner’s future is somewhat up in the air at the moment, with his two-year loan deal at Borussia Monchengladbach set to expire at the end of the season. His valued has soared since he was led go by Leverkusen, and he could be open to a move.

3) Winston Reid (West Ham United)

The New Zealand international signed a new contract with the Hammers this season, but his desire to play European football could see him tempted into a move up the country. Liverpool have been among his admirers in the past, and would no doubt love to swoop.

2) Luciano Vietto (Villarreal)

The 21-year-old striker and Argentine youth team international has scored 20 goals for his club in all competitions. Liverpool have Divock Origi to add to their squad next summer, but would no doubt welcome the chance to add another promising young striker to their ranks.

1) James Milner (Manchester City)

The versatile England midfielder will be a free agent at the end of the season, once his contract at the Etihad at the end of the season. The City man has been one of Manuel Pellegrini’s stand-out performers so far this season, but could leave the club unless a new contract is offered.
