Ten midfielders Man United should target ahead of injury-ravaged Dutchman

Reports in the Manchester Evening News claimed this week that Old Trafford boss Louis van Gaal would be prepared to set aside a chase for former United star Paul Pogba, in order to pursue his number one target – Kevin Strootman.

This decision will cause a number of raised eyebrows among United fans, who will no doubt be desperate to see the return of Pogba ahead of the recruitment of a player who has played just seven times in all competitions so far this season.

Here are ten players that would be more suitable summer arrivals in Manchester:

10) Radja Nainggolan (AS Roma)

One of the players to benefit from Strootman’s continued absence so far this season. The Belgian is the midfield hard-man United crave.

9) Morgan Schneiderlin (Southampton)

The impressive Frenchman led the Saints’ charge up the Premier League table earlier this season. He would not look out of place at United.

8) Fredy Guarin (Inter Milan)

One of the few bright sparks for Inter so far this season. His six goals in all competitions have included a couple of stunning individual efforts.

7) Yohan Cabaye (Paris Saint Germain)

The former Newcastle United man has struggled to hold down a regular starting spot in the French capital, and would likely welcome a return to England.

6) Roberto Firmino (1899 Hoffenheim)

The promising young Brazilian was outstanding last season. While he has struggled to live up to those standards this term, he has plenty of room to grow.

5) Ilkay Gundogan (Borussia Dortmund)

A potential victim of Dortmund’s difficult domestic season, which is likely to see them miss out on a place in Europe next year.

4) Joao Moutinho (AS Monaco)

The 28-year-old surprised plenty of people when he followed Radamel Falcao to Monaco in 2013. Could he also follow him to Old Trafford?

3) Miralem Pjanic (AS Roma)

Roma’s star midfielder over the last couple of the seasons. The Bosnian has lots of quality and would definitely add something to the midfield.

2) Kevin De Bruyne (Wolfsburg)

The former Chelsea man has been near impossible so far this season, with goals and assists virtually piling up against his name.

1) Paul Pogba (Juventus)

The best young midfielder on the planet, United would have to break the bank to get him, but surely it would be worth it considering his quality?
