The Reds have long been linked with a move for the talented young Spaniard, who has been unable to command a regular first-team place at the Nou Camp this season and indeed for much of his career with the club.

Despite being one of the more promising players coming through Barca’s famed La Masia youth academy, Montoya now looks set to be offloaded on the cheap as Liverpool seek to bring the player to the Premier League, according to the Metro.

It seems sensible that Brendan Rodgers would target a player who could slot in well to his 3-4-3 formation next season, with the 23-year-old a good candidate to play as a wing-back for Liverpool.

Raheem Sterling and Lazar Markovic have been used in that role in recent times but are perhaps more suited to playing further forward.
