Catalan daily newspaper Sport claims that representatives of the Brazil international have struck a deal with the unnamed English outfit, but the long-running saga could yet take another twist because the player would still prefer to remain at the Nou Camp.

The 31-year-old will come to the end of his current contract this summer. While the La Liga giants are willing to offer him a 12-month extension, Sport claim Alves has been holding out for a three-year deal, and the two parties remain some way apart in their negotiations as time runs out.

They add that Alves’ agent Dinorah Santana, who has entered into a fresh round of talks with the club, is asking Barcelona to resolve the situation one way or another as soon as possible in order for the player to map out his immediate and long-term future.

The unnamed Premier League club will be watching developments with interest in the coming weeks, while there is sure to be a long line of suitors also hoping to capitalise on the stand-off. Manchester United have been strongest linked in recent days, with the Metro stating they are at the front of the queue after Paris Saint-Germain ruled themselves out of a deal.
