Montpellier vs. Caen Ligue 1 preview: MHSC eyeing Europe

Montpellier Herault Sport Club and Stade Malherbe Caen meet on Sunday both looking to put disappointing defeats behind them.

When: 4.00 pm GMT, 19 April 2015

Where: Stade de la Mosson, Montpellier

MHSC were bested 1-0 by strugglers Toulouse last weekend, it was the kind of result that has become worrying characteristic for Rolland Courbis’s inconsistent Paillade.

SC Bastia’s failure to win the Coupe de la Ligue means that the team finishing fifth in Ligue 1 will secure a spot in the Europa League third qualifying round. It is news that may well sharpen Montpellier’s focus as they approach the end of the season.

Should they beat Caen and Saint-Etienne (who currently sit in fifth) lose the Derby of the Loire against Olympique Lyonnais, Montpellier would only be four points off Europe with five games still to play, including a trip to ASSE.

Caen, however, despite sitting relatively pretty in 13th, will be conscious of the fact that they sit only three points clear of the drop zone. They will be keen to pull away from danger, but have won just one of their last five.
