The Red Devils spent big on a number of new players last summer, bringing in big names like Angel Di Maria and Radamel Falcao, and it now looks like a similar spending spree could be on the cards this year.

Although United look set to get back into the Premier League’s top four and play Champions League football next season, there is still work to be done to close the gap on champions Chelsea and mount a more serious challenge for the title in 2015/16.

According to latest reports, these are the five players van Gaal could bring in to improve his squad for next term:

1) Gareth Bale (Real Madrid)

Supposedly head of the queue to sign Gareth Bale if he leaves Real Madrid, United could make this highly exciting signing to their attack, despite already bringing in Depay in that area.

2) Edinson Cavani (Paris Saint-Germain)

Perhaps to replace the misfiring Falcao, Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani is also being targeted by the Red Devils to improve their current attacking options.

3) Mats Hummels (Borussia Dortmund)

A player who could make a key signing to improve United’s defence, Mats Hummels looks a likely buy from Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund.

4) Ilkay Gundogan (Borussia Dortmund)

Another raid on Borussia Dortmund could also see midfielder Ilkay Gundogan make the move to Old Trafford as van Gaal continues to search for improvements in that department.

5) Nathaniel Clyne (Southampton)

An exciting right-back who has shone for Southampton this season, Nathaniel Clyne is the final name on the list of United’s priority targets for the summer.
