The Belgian also admitted that he cried when David Moyes was sacked by the club last April. The Scot had signed the midfielder from Everton in his first transfer window at Old Trafford, and the pair had worked together at the Toffees from 2009.
He said: “I was sad when he went. I came into the canteen and saw him in a suit instead of his tracksuit. He called me into his office and told me. There were tears and that is normal, I am human. I worked six years with him. He was not a second father, but almost. He helped me a lot.”
However, it is under van Gaal that the 27-year-old has been his best while at United. He has become a key part of the team under the 63-year-old, where last year he struggled and was on the bench for large periods. In 28 appearances this season the centre-mid has managed six goals, which is six more than he did last time round.
While Moyes doesn’t exactly have a reputation of being soft, it could be the extra discipline brought in by his Dutch successor that has helped Fellaini. The former Barcelona boss seems to not even accept some of his squad being slightly late to the canteen.
The ex-Goodison Park hero said: “You think one minute is nothing and it wasn’t for training, but for the canteen. For him it’s important though. He dished out a few fines. That’s what happens to late-comers and even for a red card. You get fined, too, for a bad foul.”
