Wenger has long been linked with an interest in Schneiderlin and is ready to fork out £25m for the French international and with the Saints season petering out of late there is perhaps a good chance the long serving Saints star will push for a summer exit.

Schneiderlin watched as a host of team-mates made high-profile St Mary’s exits last summer and may now push to do likewise.

Though Wenger has seen Francis Coquelin since his return to the first team set-up it appears the Gunners boss still wants to sign a defensively minded central midfielder.

Wenger will also seek to offload Mathieu Flamini and Abou Diaby, both of whom have offered little in the way of quality in recent seasons.
