Memphis Depay arrives for Man United Medical: £28m contract set to be signed

Depay, who is 21 years of age, was top scorer in the Eredivisie this season with 22 goals in 30 games this season, and Louis Van Gaal will certainly welcome his attacking threat.

In the Premier League, Wayne Rooney is the Red Devils’ most prolific player with 12 goals, and it’s little surprise that Van Gaal is keen to improve his firepower.

Depay was also always going to pass his medical – he’s never had a serious injury in his career. A 37 day absence due to a groin strain in October was the only time he’s missed more than a week of football, and he quickly fought his way back to top condition.

The question for Van Gaal, who managed Depay at international level with the Netherlands at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, will be where to play his new signing.

Depay has played his best football cutting inside from the left flank, but so too has Ashley Young – arguably Manchester United’s best outfield player this season.

It will be up to Depay to prove he is the better, younger version of the Englishman.
