The French side could be restricted to spending less than €80 million, or £57 million, on transfers in the next window by Financial Fair Play according to French journalist Dominique Severac – but UEFA have confirmed they are relaxing the rules on FFP. With Di Maria only arriving at Old Trafford last summer for £59.7 million according to the Daily Telegraph, it could take a similar fee to sign him in the coming months.

Since arriving in Manchester the Argentine hasn’t lived up to the expectations of his big money signing – in 31 appearances he has only scored four goals. However, he has grabbed ten assists, showing some potential to perform once he is properly settled in. Several injuries haven’t allowed the 27-year-old to get a long run of games this season, and that could be what he needs to succeed.

The Ligue 1 champions could be willing to take the winger away, but it would be at the cost of their other business, according to Severac.

He said: “As long we do not know the scope of financial fair play, we can not really look at the transfer market.Everything will be decided by the end of June. I can say that PSG may have a bit more money to recruit. It will not be €60 (£42m) but €80 (£57m) for example.

“If you have a strong backer, suffice it to say that you have the money to deliver a ‘business plan’ which could allow the club to spend a little more.”
