1) He scores a lot

For a left-back, Rodriguez’s scoring stats are pretty amazing – the 22-year-old has reached double figures this season, scoring ten from defence. Incredibly, the youngster also managed seven in all competitions last season, making it 17 goals in the last two seasons. With numbers like that, perhaps he’s going to replace Radamel Falcao up front??

2) ‘The Swiss Leighton Baines’?

With his attacking style of play and great delivery with his left foot, Rodriguez has drawn comparisons with Everton and England star Leighton Baines (according to Wikipedia). Perhaps Roberto Carlos would have been a more flattering comparison, but with United known to have been so keen on Baines during David Moyes’ time in charge, there’s clearly a role for Rodriguez to fill there.

3) From a footballing family

Rodriguez comes from a footballing family, with both his older and younger brothers playing football, albeit at a lower level. His older brother Roberto Rodriguez plays for FC St Gallen, while his younger brother Francisco Rodriguez is at Ricardo’s old club Zurich and is a Switzerland Under-19 international.

4) He could’ve played for Spain

With a Spanish father and a Chilean mother, Rodriguez could have played for a number of different national sides, though he has found plenty of success in this ever-improving Switzerland national team.

5) Swiss Footballer of the Year

Rodriguez really caught the eye at last summer’s World Cup and was voted 2014 Swiss Footballer of the Year. With competition from big names like Xherdan Shaqiri, this is no mean feat for the hugely impressive left-back, who clearly has a great career ahead of him.
