There are still options out there for the Gunners, with these five looking good bets for the club as they look to strengthen that problem position…

1) Ilkay Gundogan (Borussia Dortmund)

One of the finest defensive midfielders in Europe, Borussia Dortmund star Ilkay Gundogan wants to leave the club this summer and has been linked with Arsenal several times in the past. The German international was also said to be a target for Manchester United, but may now be free for the Gunners to sign after news of Schneiderlin’s imminent move to Old Trafford.

2) Victor Wanyama (Southampton)

Schneiderlin’s underrated midfield partner at Southampton, Victor Wanyama is another top talent who shone in the Premier League this season and who could be exactly what Wenger’s side needs in the middle of the park. The powerful Kenyan international is surely ready to move to a bigger club and may now be the Gunners’ next target.

3) Lars Bender (Bayer Leverkusen)

Another possible Bundesliga star Arsenal could try to sign is Bayer Leverkusen defensive midfielder Lars Bender, who has also been linked with Barcelona in recent months after another impressive season in Germany.

4) James McCarthy (Everton)

Another outstanding performer in the Premier League this season, Everton’s James McCarthy has caught Arsenal’s eye in recent times after bossing the game from the middle of the park for Roberto Martinez’s side, and could follow in the footsteps of Mikel Arteta in swapping Goodison Park for the Emirates Stadium.

5) Radja Nainggolan (AS Roma)

Finally, Arsenal have not yet been linked with AS Roma star Radja Nainggolan, but the Belgian midfield battler has caught the attention of Liverpool this summer and looks like he’d be a great fit in English football. Should Arsenal also consider a move for the powerful Stadio Olimpico man?
