Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho appears keen to strengthen his defence this summer as the club are linked with two Atletico Madrid centre-backs in today’s Daily Telegraph.

The Blues already have the likes of John Terry, Gary Cahill and Kurt Zouma to choose from in that part of the pitch, with Terry attracting the plaudits in particular this season after the team’s immense success in winning the Premier League title and the Capital One Cup.

However, the possible availability of two Atletico stars in defence seems to have put the champions on alert this summer, with the Telegraph claiming Chelsea are interested in these two centre halves:

1) Toby Alderweireld

First on Chelsea’s list is one of the stars of Southampton’s season, Belgian defender Toby Alderweireld, who impressed greatly in his time on loan with the Saints. Unable to make himself a regular in his time with Atletico so far, the Telegraph states that Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur are also in contention to sign the 26-year-old ahead of next season.

2) Miranda

Secondly, Chelsea are ready to compete with rivals Manchester United for the possible signing of Brazilian defensive rock Miranda, who fell out of favour in Diego Simeone’s side this season and who would no doubt be a great option for Mourinho’s squad.

It may be that Terry’s age is a factor in Chelsea targeting these players, with the veteran stopper perhaps only having one or two more seasons left in him at the top level.

It is therefore wise for Chelsea to plan for the future, with Alderweireld particularly looking like a potentially good buy after his experience in England so far, as well as his age, being four years younger than Miranda.
