1) Carlos Tevez (Juventus to Boca Juniors)

With confirmation that Juventus striker Carlos Tevez has moved back to Argentina with Boca Juniors, one of Europe’s best forwards has now left for a much lower standard of competition – a big loss for the game as a whole, with the 31-year-old surely able to wait a little longer before sealing this emotional return?

2) Samuel Eto’o (Inter Milan to Anzhi Makhachkala)

Another disappointing move from a few years back saw one of the world’s best strikers in Samuel Eto’o leave Inter Milan for wealthy Russian minnows Anzhi Makhachkala. Despite still being at peak level, the Cameroon legend moved to Anzhi and endured an underwhelming end to his great career, despite a brief spell at Chelsea.

3) Radamel Falcao (Atletico Madrid to AS Monaco)

A player on top of his game when he moved to newly-promoted AS Monaco, Radamel Falcao made the incredibly unambitious move to the mega-rich club when some elite sides were after him. Now past his best, Falcao had a poor season with Manchester United, though he could still be heading to Chelsea this summer.

4) Didier Drogba (Chelsea to Shanghai Shenhua)

Departing Chelsea on a high with his Champions League final heroics in 2012, Didier Drogba was still one of the best strikers in the world when he opted to move to Chinese football with Shanghai Shenhua, later ending up with Galatasaray and back at Stamford Bridge for one more season in 2014/15.

5) David Villa (Atletico Madrid to New York City)

Despite being linked with some Premier League moves, the excellent David Villa instead left Atletico Madrid for MLS side New York City last summer, though he could surely still play at a higher level.

6) Wesley Sneijder (Inter Milan to Galatasaray)

A long-time target for Manchester United, Wesley Sneijder instead made the surprise move to Turkey with Galatasaray when deciding to leave Inter Milan. One of the best midfielders in the world at the time, it’s not clear why the Dutch playmaker did not aim a bit higher.

7) Hulk (Porto t0 Zenit Saint Petersburg)

One of the world’s most exciting talents whilst at Porto, Hulk was wanted by a whole host of big names after some amazing performances in Portugal, but he instead followed the money and went to Russian giants Zenit Saint Petersburg, where his career has gone somewhat downhill.

8) Mathieu Valbuena (Marseille to Dinamo Moscow)

Wanted by Arsenal and Liverpool last summer, classy French playmaker Mathieu Valbuena looked set for a bigger club when he decided to leave Marseille, but he also went with a big-money move to Russia, joining Dinamo Moscow in a surprise move.
