The Reds are keen to bolster their defensive options this summer and have been impressed with the 21-year-old so much that they have opened talks with Copenhagen, despite the fact he only signed for the Danish outfit in January.

The Swede is a left-back and his potential arrival would provide much needed competition in that position for Spaniard Alberto Moreno, who struggled at times in the Premier League after his switch from La Liga side Sevilla last summer, though both are the kind of exciting young prospects in keeping with the kind of players manager Brendan Rodgers likes to bring into his side.

Augustinsson is currently away on international duty and is apart of the Swedish U21 side that has been the surprise package at the European Championships.

After qualifying for the semi-finals after a dramatic last gasp equaliser against Portugal in their final group stage game, they thrashed their Danish counterparts 4-1 to set up a meeting in the final with the Portuguese on Tuesday night.

Augustinsson made the headlines [via Mail Sport] in the build up to the game against the England U21 side as he labelled them ‘overrated’ and that could prove to be a problem should he complete a move to Anfield as Danny Ings would be his teammate.

Ings is one of several players that have agreed to join the Reds this summer as Rodgers looks to improve on the club’s disappointing sixth placed finish last season.

The most exciting purchase of the lot so far is Brazilian attacking midfielder Roberto Firmino, who is set to join on a long-term deal subject to a medical after a £29m fee was agreed with Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim earlier in the week [via BBC Sport].

Rodgers is understood to be in the market for another defender and Telegraph Sport claim Southampton right-back Nathaniel Clyne will complete his move to Merseyside at some point in the next week.
