With several transfer records possibly set to be broken this summer, here’s a look at the most expensive player of all time in each position on a football pitch as it stands…

Goalkeeper: Gianluigi Buffon (£32.6m)

Still the most expensive goalkeeper ever by quite some way, Juventus and Italy legend Gianluigi Buffon cost a whopping £32.6m for Juve to sign from Parma, and he’s been worth every penny.

Centre-back: David Luiz (£50m)

A ridiculous signing for a player arguably not even worth half that price, David Luiz became the most expensive central defender of all time when he joined Paris Saint-Germain from Chelsea. Considering the number of greats like Fabio Cannavaro and Rio Ferdinand who moved for less, it really is a bizarre transfer.

Right-back: Lilian Thuram (£22m)

Not the highest fee paid, but £22m remains the most anyone’s ever forked out for a right-back, and it was another excellent big-money buy for Juventus for French legend Lilian Thuram.

Left-back: Luke Shaw (£30m)

Another surprise name, £30m for Luke Shaw is currently the most anyone has ever paid for a left-back in the history of the game. Despite only being a teenager when he moved to Manchester United, the former Southampton man was one of the biggest transfers of last summer, and so far he has not looked worth it at all.

Defensive midfield: Juan Sebastian Veron (£28.1m)

Signed as one of the finest midfielders in the world when he first joined Manchester United, Juan Sebastian Veron remains the most expensive defensive midfielder in the game’s history, and is another who has to go down as a poor buy, despite his amazing form during his time at Lazio.

Attacking midfield: James Rodriguez (£63m)

Ahead of legends like Zinedine Zidane and Kaka, also of Real Madrid fame, Colombian sensation James Rodriguez moved for an astronomical fee last summer after the AS Monaco man starred at the 2014 World Cup.

Winger: Gareth Bale (£85m)

Ahead of his team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale is the most expensive winger of all time after Real Madrid signed him from Tottenham for an amazing £85m in the summer of 2013, making him the most expensive player in history as well. The Welshman has had his critics at the Bernabeu, but also netted in Champions League and Copa del Rey finals in his first season with the club.

Striker: Luis Suarez (£75m)

Up front, former Liverpool star Luis Suarez became the most expensive striker signing of all time when he joined Barcelona last summer in a £75m deal. The Uruguayan was a big hit at Anfield and also enjoyed a hugely successful first year at the Nou Camp, winning the treble.
