If Louis van Gaal does manage to bring the 27-year-old to Old Trafford, then he could well end having to axe several of his first team squad to make room.

Here are four who could end up leaving the Red Devils so that the Argentina international is able to arrive…

5) Adnan Januzaj

Seems to have seen his development stall under Louis van Gaal after making great strides under David Moyes. With Gaitan returning it could be that the 20-year-old makes way, even if just on a loan. This is especially likely as the Argentinian tends to play on the wing like the youngster.

4) Antonio Valencia

A regular at right-back last season, but if the Red Devils find a natural full-back to play in the position as well as Gaitan to play further forward then he could be allowed to leave. At 29-year-old the Ecuador international could still have a lot to offer a team lower in the division.

3) Javier Hernandez

Although Gaitan is mainly a winger, having the player out wide could mean that Juan Mata or Memphis Depay could be used centrally with Wayne Rooney pushed up front. This leaves a couple of forwards without a purpose at Old Trafford, and the former Real Madrid loanee is one of them.

2) James Wilson

Another forward who could be pushed out by the reshuffle when Gaitan arrives. However, the 19-year-old may only go out on loan, and will hope to return and push for a place in the starting XI.

1) Nani

It looks like the Portuguese is on his way to Fenerbahce, and the arrival of another winger will only speed up his departure.
