The 24-year-old has been rumoured to be on his way to the Bernabeu throughout the summer, and has not helped the stories by refusing to sign a contract extension. His current deal ends after next season, and this is the last transfer window in which the Red Devils can get a sizeable fee for one of their prize assets.

However, with a move to Los Blancos appearing to take longer than expected, the Spain international now has to report to pre-season training. It could be quite awkward with his teammates!

“Real Madrid? I have to return to Manchester for pre-season,” he said when asked about a transfer.

With United demanding Sergio Ramos in return for the goalkeeper, it could be a while before they manage to agree a deal for De Gea with Real. It shouldn’t be too big a worry for manager Louis van Gaal though, as it just means that he has a great stopper for a while longer, and the club can easily absorb any losses if they fail to sell .
