Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin is reportedly holding out for a move to Arsenal over Manchester United this summer, according to the Sunday Times, and here’s four reasons he’s RIGHT to be unsure over a move to Old Trafford…

1) Arsenal are a club on the up

With two FA Cup wins in a row and two seasons in a row of finishing above Manchester United, it’s pretty clear that the clubs are heading in different directions at the moment. Arsenal are clearly on the up after paying off their stadium debt and becoming competitive in the transfer market again, and United look to have a long road of recovery ahead of them after the retirement of the hugely influential Sir Alex Ferguson. If Schneiderlin wants trophies and a club in an upward spiral instead of a downward one, then the Emirates Stadium is surely the place to go right now.

2) They play his style of football

Schneiderlin is believed to be concerned about the differences in playing style at both clubs, as noted in the Sunday Times piece, and he’s right – the passing, technical football deployed by Arsene Wenger at Arsenal is closer to the system that made the 25-year-old a big success with Southampton. United under Louis van Gaal, meanwhile, have been a mixed bag, with no coherent style to speak of so far, including some bizarre tactical decisions, unusual formations and a surprising tendancy to go long-ball when things get tough.

3) Arsenal are more loyal

Schneiderlin has to think carefully about his career here, and may be alarmed at the way some players have gone backwards under Van Gaal at United, who rules with far more of an iron fist than Arsenal boss Wenger. Already players like Angel Di Maria and Radamel Falcao have suffered under the harsh Dutchman, who also unfairly dropped in-form players like Ander Herrera at times last season. Wenger, by contrast, is known to stick with his players, and will not overreact if Schneiderlin does not manage to settle in in north London straight away.

4) Chance to replicate French legends

You’d be surprised by how much these things make a difference, but Arsenal’s famous group of French players that dominated English football earlier on in Wenger’s reign has made them very big across the Channel. Schneiderlin may well be motivated by the chance to become another French legend for the Gunners, and he could well be their finest defensive midfielder since legendary club captain Patrick Vieira.
