Manchester United have possibly been linked to hundreds of transfers this summer, but manager Louis van Gaal will have to pick his signings carefully if he wants to improve on the fourth placed finish of last season.

Here are five signings that they should pick up to turn the team back in to a title challenging outfit…

5) Nicolas Otamendi, Valencia

If there is one area of the team that is in need of improving at Old Trafford it is the back line. After helping the Mestalla side to concede just 32 goals last season he could give an air of calm to the defence that hasn’t been there since the departures of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.

4) Ezequiel Garay, Zenit St. Petersburg

One centre-back may not be enough though, and Garay could be the perfect partner for Otamendi. The Argentina international has played at the highest level with Real Madrid in the past, and could be ready to return to it at Old Trafford.

3) Hugo Lloris, Tottenham

With David De Gea one of the most important players for Louis van Gaal last season, it is imperative he signs a replacement if the Spaniard leaves for Real Madrid. Already proven in the Premier League and on the world stage with France, Lloris could be perfect.

2) Edinson Cavani, PSG

The Red Devils need a goalscorer after limping along without one last season. Even if van Gaal plays Wayne Rooney up front regularly, they will still need another option and the Uruguay international could be the man. He scored 31 goals in 52 games last season.

1) Bastian Schweinsteiger, Bayern Munich

Even van Gaal himself has admitted that a new central midfielder is needed at Old Trafford, and the World Cup winner would be far more inspiring than Southampton star Morgan Schneiderlin. A serial winner, the 30-year-old would also bring the experience needed to get over the line.
