Manchester United have been handed the boost of agreeing a new two-year contract with young defender Josh Harrop ahead of their pre-season tour of the US this summer, according to the Metro.

The England Under-20 international seems a bright prospect at Old Trafford and one who could be challenging for a first-team place this season if he manages to impress in the club’s next round of friendly matches in the States.

Louis van Gaal may be well known for his big spending habits and fondness for bringing in established world stars like Angel Di Maria and Memphis Depay in his time with the Red Devils so far, but he has also shown a willingness to give the club’s youth team stars a try in the senior side.

Last term, the likes of Tyler Blackett, Paddy McNair and James Wilson all found ways into the United first-team ahead of some bigger names, and it could be that a top young talent like Harrop could be next to notch up some appearances for the Reds.

United have a proud tradition of bringing through homegrown players, with some of the best stars from the Sir Alex Ferguson era introduced from the youth team, such as club legends Ryan Giggs, David Beckham and brothers Gary and Phil Neville.
