5) Cristiano Ronaldo, Real Madrid

A return to United for the 30-year-old could instantly turn them in to title challengers. The two-time Ballon d’Or winner managed 66 goals in 58 games last season, and it would be given a hero’s welcome at Old Trafford. Whether they can prise him from the Bernabeu is another matter.

4) Gareth Bale, Real Madrid

If the Red Devils aren’t able to get their old charge back, then they could go after his teammate. The Welshman is proven in the Premier League, and after being booed by his own fans last season could be tempted by a return to the division.

3) Mario Gotze, Bayern Munich

With the World Cup winner finding it difficult to get in to the starting XI at the Allianz Arena, he may be available if a United make a massive bid. One of the best young talents in world football, it would be a major coup if Louis van Gaal could tempt him to the club.

2) Pedro, Barcelona

Luis Suarez, Lionel Messi, and Neymar have taken the forward positions at the Catalan club, and the recent acquisition of Arda Turan could push Pedro even further down the pecking order. Able to play on either wing and with experience of winning almost every competition possible, the 27-year-old could be a perfect fit at Old Trafford.

1) Marco Reus, Borussia Dortmund

Liverpool and Arsenal have been linked to the forward [Metro], but United could do worse than get involved in the tussle. Struggled with injuries in the last campaign, but is fit again now and is still one of the top players on the continent.
