Angel Di Maria: Five Manchester United transfer targets who could replace ace, including Real Madrid star and former Chelsea man

Angel Di Maria left Manchester United for PSG on Thursday, leaving Louis van Gaal without his record signing.

The Argentina international scored four goals and assisted another ten last season, after joining for a record-breaking £59.7 million. He failed to settle in England though, and this contributed to a drop off in form in the second half of the campaign. Even Ashley Young was playing ahead of the 27-year-old in the final few months.

The 63-year-old will surely now be on the lookout for a replacement, and there are several players who have already been linked with Old Trafford who could fit the bill.

Whoever it is will have the pressure on to help United challenge Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester City at the top of the league…

5) Pedro, Barcelona

Shut out by Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, and Neymar at the Nou Camp, the 27-year-old may well be open to a move to United as a result. Never the main man for the Blaugrana, could he deal with the added pressure of being expected to produce every week? Linked by Manchester Evening News.

4) Nicolas Gaitan, Benfica

Not as big of a name as some of the others on this list, but the Argentinian could be just as effective. Known for his direct running and ability to take on a man, the 27-year-old could be a like for like replacement for his compatriot. The Daily Telegraph think a deal is on.

3) Lucas Moura, PSG

Still young at 22-years-old, the Brazilian has been unable to become a regular starter at the Parc des Princes despite occasional flashes of brilliance. Linked by the Metro, and could be a long-term option to take over from Di Maria. If given time to develop, the winger has the potential to become one of the best in the world.

2) Kevin De Bruyne, Wolfsburg

Allowed to leave Chelsea a year and a half ago, the Belgium international has gone on to show up Jose Mourinho’s error by becoming one of the top attacking midfielders in Europe. The Daily Star believe that the Red Devils are interested, and a move could not only strengthen the team but also annoy their Premier League rivals.

1) Gareth Bale, Real Madrid

As shown by his time at Tottenham, the Welshman is able to single-handedly carry a team in the Premier League. Were the forward to sign for United – and the Daily Express think they are interested – he would automatically put them among the favourites for the title.
