Manchester United have left the number nine shirt open, perhaps meaning that they are planning a major transfer to fill the position.

Louis van Gaal has already signed Memphis Depay, Sergio Romero, Morgan Schneiderlin, Bastian Schweinsteiger this summer, but is yet to strengthen up front. Manchester United still in race for La Liga star after Manchester City see offer rejected

5) Karim Benzema, Real Madrid

Arsenal have been linked heavily with the forward this summer, but United are also interested [Daily Express]. The 27-year-old has been a regular at the Bernabeu for the last six seasons, which is no mean feat. Moreover, the forward has won La Liga, Copa del Rey, and the Champions League along the way.

4) Harry Kane, Tottenham

The Red Devils have already seen a bid turned down for the 22-year-old, according to MARCA. A revelation last season, the youngster scored a brilliant 32 goals in all competitions, including one on his England debut.

3) Edinson Cavani, PSG

Despite scoring 34 goals in 65 Ligue 1 games over the last two seasons, there is still some doubt over whether the Uruguayan is first choice at the Parc des Princes. As a result, he has been linked with United [Daily Express], and could be a great addition to the Premier League.

2) Fernando Llorente, Juventus

Less inspiring than the other players on this list, but the 30-year-old would still add a lot to the team if he was signed. The Daily Express have claimed that the Red Devils could go for the Spain international, and he could be a solid backup for Wayne Rooney.

2) Robert Lewandowski, Bayern Munich

United have been warned that the Poland international will cost over £35 million [Sky Sports], but that is not something that will put off the Red Devils if they truly want the 26-year-old. A clinical finisher, the forward could be the player to turn the Red Devils in to title challengers.
