Manchester United sale means Arsenal could pick up high-profile forward

PSG star Ezequiel Lavezzi could be allowed to leave the club after they bought Angel Di Maria from Manchester United, reports Forza Italian Football [via the Daily Star].

Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham, and United themselves have been linked with a move for the 30-year-old [Star], who recently helped Argentina to the final of the Copa America. However, the Premier League quartet could be beaten to the winger by Juventus, again according to the Star.

The Old Lady want the player after missing out on Mario Gotze, while they have also lost a key offensive threat already this summer when Arturo Vidal departed for Bayern Munich.

However, Red Devils manager Louis van Gaal recently claimed that he is on the lookout for players with speed and creativity [Daily Mail], and the former Napoli man could fit the bill. United have already been linked with Barcelona ace Pedro [Manchester Evening News] and Benfica wideman Nicolas Gaitan [O Jogo via Metro], who both fit the bill, but the Ligue 1 player would represent another option for the north-west heavyweights.

“Whether we can win the title [in the next two seasons] is dependable if we can buy players with speed and creativity,” said van Gaal, “you shall always be compared with other clubs. Barcelona without Neymar and Messi, their speed and creativity, they have Pedro behind.

“Bayern Munich: Ribery and Robben. After that they can change with Muller and they also had Shaqiri [now at Inter Milan] at other times.

“Chelsea have Hazard, Willian, Oscar — that is speed and creativity. [Ashley] Young had a great season. [Juan] Mata also. But they don’t have the speed of Hazard or Robben. We have to improve our selection in that way.”

Meanwhile, Liverpool have already signed forwards in Roberto Firmino, Danny Ings, and Christian Benteke, meaning Arsenal and Tottenham could represent the prime opportunities for Lavezzi. While approaching the latter stages of his career, the Argentine forward still managed eight goals and two assists in 31 Ligue 1 games last season. The Gunners may represent a more enticing option for the player as they are competing in the Champions League and could offer Lavezzi the chance to have another shot at Europe’s premier continental club competititon.
