1) Their rivals are a mess

Arsenal are not alone in having a poor transfer window – things have gone from bad to worse at both Chelsea and Manchester United, who have both seen poor results on the pitch as well at the start of the season. Liverpool and Tottenham are not setting the world alight either, and there’s plenty of reason to think the Gunners will be Manchester City’s main title challengers.

2) They’re defensively strong

Arsenal are not yet scoring or playing their best attacking football, but they continue to look solid after some stronger defensive displays last season. Petr Cech’s arrival will prove a great signing despite his nightmare start in the opening day against West Ham, which looks increasingly like a freak result. Elsewhere, Gabriel has shone in the absence of Per Mertesacker and looks like a good January signing, despite not initially playing as first choice.

3) Welbeck could still come good

It is a little soon of Arsenal fans to be writing off Danny Welbeck, who showed some potential last season but was in and out of the team, often playing out wide, which was part of his problem at Manchester United. The England international should now be trusted ahead of Olivier Giroud and could thrive if shown some confidence.

4) Sanchez will get better

Slow to get going last season, Alexis Sanchez also looks a little fatigued after a long summer of competing in Copa America, but there’s no doubt he has the potential to be even better this season once he gets going, though in fairness he could probably do with a rest first.
