Wayne Rooney plays down talk of breaking England goalscoring record against San Marino

England national team captain Wayne Rooney has attempted to play down talk of him setting a new goalscoring record against San Marino this evening by insisting he is fully focused on the three points.

The Manchester United skipper can create history against the international minnows as he is just one shy of Sir Bobby Charlton’s 49 goals for the Three Lions and has been heavily tipped to not only equal the record that has stood for over four decades, but set a new one by the time the final whistle blows in Seravalle.

However, Rooney says winning the game which will clinch their qualification at next summer’s European Championships is more important than his own personal glory:

“I think obviously the most important thing is the team doing well. It’s nice to score and hopefully I can do that, but as the manager said the important thing is the team,” he told Sky Sports.

“I am looking forward to the game, it’s going to be a good game for us and hopefully we can get the victory we want and put ourselves through,” Rooney added.

The Three Lions have eased through their qualifying group so far and should maintain their 100% record with victory over  San Marino side, who have lost all but one of their fixtures and are not expected to cause many problems.
