Messi starts as Argentina take on Mexico in friendly

Lionel Messi has been named in Argentina’s starting eleven for tonight’s friendly game against Mexico.

The game is the final warm-up match ahead of both teams’ next competitive games in October, when Mexico will face the United States in a Confederations Cup playoff game and Argentina open their World Cup 2018 qualifying campaign against Ecuador.

Mexico have made nine changes to the side that drew 3-3 with Trinidad and Tobago on Saturday, as interim boss Tuca Ferretti returns to the 5-3-2 formation that former boss Miguel Herrera deployed.

Interestingly, Argentina have named Nahuel Guzman in goal. He plays for Liga MX side Tigres UANL – the team Ferretti manages and club level.

Teams in full:

Mexico – Munoz, Reyes, Marquez, Moreno, I Jimenez, Layun, Vazquez, Guardado, Herrera, Chicharito, Jimenez.

Argentina – Guzman, Demichelis, Otamendi, Roncaglia, Rojo, Mascherano, Gago, Banega, Messi, Tevez, Correa
