Rooney injury: How Man Utd should line up without their captain – Depay, Martial or Fellaini up front?

How Man Utd should line up after Rooney injury.

With Manchester United being dealt the blow of a Wayne Rooney injury for today’s game against Liverpool, here’s a look at how Louis van Gaal can use this as an opportunity to try a new-look side.

The Red Devils have not been at their best so far this season, and Rooney in particular has looked poor in the Premier League,  with no goals so far.

There have been some calls for the England international to be dropped, and now that he misses this big match, here’s a look at how Van Gaal’s side could look in his absence…

GK: David de Gea

Surely back in goal for the Liverpool game after signing a new contract, David de Gea replaces Sergio Romero to return as number one goalkeeper.

DR: Matteo Darmian

After a fine start to the season, summer signing Matteo Darmian continues as usual at right-back for United.

DL: Luke Shaw

Seemingly first choice at left-back this term, youngster Luke Shaw resumes the role for the Red Devils this weekend.

DC: Chris Smalling

No changes at centre-back, with Chris Smalling carrying on in the side after a fine run of form of late.

DC: Daley Blind

Adapting well to an unfamiliar role, Daley Blind continues alongside Smalling as United look reasonably solid at the back, the defeat to Swansea aside.

MC: Morgan Schneiderlin

A fine summer signing in midfield, Morgan Schneiderlin will surely continue to be first choice for the Reds this season.

MC: Ander Herrera

An underrated performer, Ander Herrera looks a better bet than the unfit Bastian Schweinsteiger at the moment and should partner Schneiderlin.

AMR: Juan Mata

In a free role from the right, Juan Mata can do plenty of damage from this side, even if it is not necessarily his best position.

AML: Ashley Young

Coming in on the left, Ashley Young played well in a number of positions last season and deserves more playing time.

AMC: Marouane Fellaini

Often effective in this deep-lying target man role, Marouane Fellaini should come in for United to provide some height and strength, as well as a similar aggression to Rooney.

FC: Memphis Depay

With Anthony Martial probably not ready to start straight away, another talented youngster, Memphis Depay, takes the main striker’s role after the Rooney injury. The Dutchman has played up front before and showed what a deadly finisher he can be in the Champions League against Club Brugge.
