Manchester United predicted line up vs. Middlesbrough: Jesse Lingard set to start, will Wayne Rooney be dropped?

Manchester United host Middlesbrough in the Capital One Cup on Wednesday evening.

Both sides are in fine form and will be keen to advance in the league cup, particularly following the Tuesday eliminations of Arsenal and Chelsea.

Louis van Gaal will be keen to advance past Boro as he hopes to secure his first silverware in England.

Click through for our predicted XI.

GK: David de Gea

He kept a clean sheet against Manchester City at the weekend, and LVG will be keen not to disrupt his side’s defence.

DR: Matteo Darmian

Likely to continue at right-back, particularly with Antonio Valencia injured.

DL: Marcos Rojo

As with right-back, a lack of other options should ensure that Rojo keeps his place on the left.

DC: Chris Smalling

Coming of age this season, and getting to the point where he can be considered a true pillar of strength for United.

DC: Phil Jones

Likely to be named alongside Smalling, with Daley Blind waiting on in reserve.

MC: Morgan Schneiderlin

Quietly effective in a reserved role against City, Schneiderlin should be in a position to take control of the contest against Boro.

MC: Michael Carrick

The 34-year-old isn’t enjoying his best campaign and has looked a little off the pace in the Premier League, but will help United keep control and take a stranglehold on the contest.

AMR: Jesse Lingard

Having impressed in recent fixtures against CSKA Moscow and Manchester City, Lingard looks deserving of a starting berth. He has the pace to make a big impression, but is he a long-term solution?

AML: Memphis Depay

Just gets the nod ahead of Ashley Young, as van Gaal will surely be keen for Memphis to get some consistent performances under his belt.  As yet, he has only demonstrated his class in brief moments.

AMC: Andreas Pereira

Has already been afforded his first start in the competition by van Gaal, and ought to retain his spot and look to take another opportunity to shine.

FC: Wayne Rooney

Much maligned of late,  Rooney will be desperate to prove that he can still cut it as United’s leading centre-forward.
