Manchester United to make £28.9m offer for Bundesliga starlet

Manchester United are pretty flush with midfield talent this season, but it has not stopped the club from pursuing the hottest names available on the market, with Bayer Leverkusen’s Hakan Calhanoglu the latest player linked to Old Trafford.

According to the Metro, United are readying a transfer bid for the Turkish attacking midfielder.

The 21-year-old midfielder has 37 goals in 125 league appearances for Bayer Leverkusen, Hamburg SV and Karlsruher SC. Calhanoglu has also been capped 13 times for Turkey, scoring four goals since 2013.

The Metro reported that the club will offer somewhere in the area of £28.9 million for Calhanoglu, but noted that his contract, which runs through 2019, does not include a release clause.

United made two huge splashes in the midfield market this summer when they picked up Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin and veteran Bastian Schweinsteiger, both of whom have contributed to the club’s strong start to the season.

However, with Schweinsteiger already in his early 30s, and Michael Carrick already 34, manager Louis van Gaal could want someone younger to take over the midfield.
