Moyes sacked: Five Premier League clubs that should look at ex-Manchester United boss, including Chelsea

News broke on Monday that David Moyes had been sacked by Real Sociedad following a string of poor results.

The Scottish coach leaves La Real sitting 18th in the Spanish top flight, having won only two and losing six of their opening 11 matches.

While Moyes’s reputation may be at a low following his failings in Spain and his high-profile struggles at Manchester United, but he surely has enough experience and clout to make a difference to a Premier League side needing a new face and a fresh impetus.

In this feature, we look at five Premier League sides who should consider a move for Moyes

during the Barclays Premier League match between Newcastle United and Arsenal at St James’ Park on August 29, 2015 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England.

Newcastle

Moyes has been linked in the past, and with Steve McClaren struggling to have a major impact since taking the helm—the Magpies have won only two matches. The club has the kind of profile that might appeal to Moyes, while he may have the authority to restore the Toon’s lustre.

Chelsea

Down in 16th place, with Jose Mourinho losing his grip, the Blues could do a lot worse than turn to the Scot. He has copious EPL experience and has been in a relegation battle before.

Southampton

While Southampton are not considering offloading their manager Ronald Koeman, they may not have a choice if—as has been mooted—the Dutch coach is nabbed by Chelsea. In this case, Moyes could be a good candidate to stabilise the Saints and keep their European aspirations alive.

Aston Villa

Admittedly, Villa have just appointed Remi Garde as Tim Sherwood’s successor, but how long will the French coach be at Villa Park? Already bottom of the league, and with no experience of managing in England, how long will Garde be given to turn things around. If there’s no significant improvement after the festive period, might Randy Lerner twist again?

Norwich

The Canaries are faring fairly well upon their return to the Premier League, and sit outside the relegation zone. However, while they are four points clear of 18th-placed Bournemouth, they have already lost six matches. Norwich have a penchant for dour Scottish managers (four of their last seven coaches have been Scots), and Moyes would be a safe pair of hands.
