Liverpool Saponara: Five midfielders Reds should sign instead of Serie A playmaker

Reports have emerged that Liverpool are targeting Riccardo Saponara for a summer transfer, and that could be big for the Reds.

The Empoli midfielder has been a star for the Serie A club, scoring four goals and adding nine assists this season – and he’s still very young.

Saponara is certainly a good option but Liverpool can do so much better than a player who could barely cut it on the AC Milan starting roster. And with both the Europa League and FA Cup still ripe for the taking, a big midfield transfer in January would likely be a better option for Liverpool.

Here are five players Liverpool should try to sign instead of Saponara:

William Carvalho

Arsenal have been pursuing Carvalho for months, but his injury history has kept Arsene Wenger from making a serious offer. However, he’s an incredibly talented prospect who has only been getting better in Portugal.

Ever Banega

A low-risk veteran option from Valencia, Banega can come in and play right away in Klopp’s scheme.

Christoph Kramer

Kramer already has the full faith of Joachim Low – a man who has a mutual respect for Klopp. The 24-year-old midfielder would become a star for Klopp immediately.

Steven Gerrard

If Klopp wants to bring in a leader to keep the developmental players in line, Gerrard won’t be busy for the next few months.

Jack Grealish

Too much partying got the Aston Villa starlet left out of England’s Euro 2016 roster and earned him a spot on Aston Villa’s Under-21 team. But if Klopp is confident he can rein in the rambunctious midfielder, he may have perfect partner to Christian Benteke.
