Video: Martin Skrtel own goal – weak block from Slovakian leaves Liverpool facing shock Newcastle defeat

Newcastle United appear poised to turn the Premier League form book on its head with victory over Liverpool this afternoon thanks to an own goal from Martin Skrtel at St James’ Park.

The 19th-place Magpies have given as good as they’ve got on Tyneside and were rewarded with a slice of luck when Skrtel diverted Georginio Wijnaldum’s 69th-minute shot beyond Simon Mignolet.

The Slovakian’s seventh Premier League own goal – only Reds legend Jamie Carragher and Richard Dunne have scored more – could have been avoided if his weak block had a bit more conviction about it.

The architect of his misfortune – Wijnaldum – may hope to claim the goal himself. The Dutchman has been a shining light for the Magpies this season and already has six top-flight goals to his name.

This shock victory would lift Newcastle one place to 18th in the table, and inflict just a second defeat in 10 league games on Liverpool, who will climb into the top six if they can salvage a late point or better.
