Christian Eriksen goal video v Sunderland: Tottenham playmaker needs huge slice of luck to end drought

Christian Eriksen needed a huge slice of luck to end his three-month Premier League scoring drought.

The Danish playmaker equalised for Tottenham Hotspur against Sunderland at White Hart Lane this afternoon, 90 seconds after the Black Cats had taken a 40th-minute lead through Patrick van Aanholt.

A lovely Spurs move opened up what had been an organised Sunderland defence, and Eriksen eventually forced the ball over the line with the help of Lee Cattermole’s clumsy attempted clearance.

Sunderland keeper Jordan Pickford, making his Premier League debut, rushed out to make an excellent block from Harry Kane, but Eriksen’s shot from the rebound was bundled into the back of the net.

This is only Eriksen’s third league goal of the season – his previous two came from free-kicks in October’s 2-2 draw with Swansea City. He did score in last weekend’s FA Cup draw with Leicester City.

That is a disappointing return for a player of Eriksen’s talent – he managed 10 last term including several match-winners. Spurs will hope that this fortunate goal will trigger an upturn in form.
