Besiktas set to make €7m bid for Liverpool target

Besiktas are preparing a €7 million bid for Barcelona defender Jeremy Mathieu according to Sport.

The Black Eagles have made strengthening their defensive backline a priority after conceding the most number of goals in the top three last season.

The Istanbul giants won the Super Lig last season and would be able to offer Mathieu Champions League football were he to make the move.

Besiktas could however, face competition from Liverpool who want to bolster their defensive options after deciding not to renew Kolo Toure’s contract, selling Martin Skrtel to Fenerbahce and suffering another injury set back with Joe Gomez.

Liverpool currently have just two fit centre backs available in Croatian international Dejan Lovren as well as summer signing Josep Matip.

Barcelona could be willing to give Mathieu the green light to leave the club after signing Samuel Umtiti and Lucas Digne. Mathieu is expected to fall down the pecking order as a result.
