Arsenal move step closer to signing £14m defender after Bundesliga giants sign replacement

Bayer Leverkusen have just signed 25-year-old Dynamo Kiev defender on a five-year deal according to the official club website.

The latest move could make the Gunners pursuit of Omer Toprak a more realistic proposition considering Bayer now have sufficient cover in defence.

The Daily Star recently reported that Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is considering launching a £14 million offer for Toprak which would be considerably less than the failed Mustafi move.

Wenger is growing desperate for a centre-back after failing to land his transfer priority and has been forced to look for alternatives before the end of the transfer window.

The Gunners are currently without Per Mertesacker and Gabriel who are both injured.

Toprak did recently reveal to Turkish Football that a move could be on the cards: “It is not certain whether I will stay at Bayer Leverkusen, we still have a month and anything could happen until them.”

With the transfer window coming to an end Wenger may be forced into pulling the trigger for the only defensive target he currently has that could potentially make the move without talks stalling.

The Gunners have also been linked with Simon Kjaer but Fenerbahce do not want to sell and Johnny Evans reportedly will not leave West Brom.
