Arsenal set for underwhelming defensive signing after La Liga minnows pull out race

Arsenal have moved into pole position to sign Monaco defender Tisserand according to the Daily Star.

Per the source, La Liga minnows Espanyol have pulled out of the race for the defender leaving the Gunners as favourites to complete the transfer.

Tisserand has emerged as a defensive target for Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger after being forced into the market to try and sign a new central defender after losing Per Mertesacker and Gabriel to injury.

The Congolese international is a versatile defender who can play both in the centre and as a right back, and has spent time on loan at Ligue 1 sides Lens and Toulouse in the past.

Wenger is under pressure to sign a defender but has struggled to land his priority target Mustafi from Valencia and has had to switch focus to alternatives names on his shortlist.

The North London based outfit conceded four goals in their opening league game against Liverpool before drawing against Premier League champions Leicester City on Sunday.
