10 worst Premier League signings of the season: Chelsea dominate list of duds, plus Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool flops

Earlier we treated you to the 10 best Premier League signings of the season, now it’s time for the worst…

Unsurprisingly, Chelsea score high here with a host of awful additions, and in truth we could’ve gone above the four we’ve put in to our list.

Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool fared well on our best signings list, but a few of their flops have not escaped our attention here.

Read on to see who made our top ten, with number one being the absolute worst of the lot…

10) Victor Lindelof (Manchester United)

In fairness to Victor Lindelof, he’s not played that much for Manchester United, but he has to go down as a fairly big disappointment.

United could really have done with discovering the new Nemanja Vidic with this signing of a promising young player from Benfica, but he’s never really looked up to scratch at this level.

9) Fernando Llorente (Tottenham)

Another one who’s not played enough to go higher on this list, but Fernando Llorente is undoubtedly a big disappointment for Tottenham.

It looks harder and harder to find a decent backup centre-forward these days, and the Spaniard has rarely added anything to this Spurs side when given the chance to fill in for main man Harry Kane.

Unfortunately for Tottenham, Kane’s injury now means they’ll be seeing more of this guy.

8) Gylfi Sigurdsson (Everton)

A superb playmaker at Swansea City, but Gylfi Sigurdsson has struggled for a variety of reasons at Everton.

The Iceland international hasn’t always been used in his best position, and has also had to adjust to playing under two very different managers in an unbalanced squad overall.

Still, for the money they paid for him, Everton would be justified in expecting much more from Sigurdsson, who can’t seem to play for anyone other than Swansea, having also flopped at Tottenham earlier in his career in between two spells with the Welsh side.

Liverpool’ Dominic Solanke looks a poor signing

7) Dominic Solanke (Liverpool)

Thought of as a bright prospect at Chelsea, Dominic Solanke joined Liverpool in a bid to get more first-team football, but it’s fair to say it hasn’t worked out at all.

The 20-year-old has started just three league matches for the Reds and is yet to score a single goal.

Quite what this signing is for, no one really knows. At least Chelsea can be satisfied in letting a rubbish youngster go for a change, rather than another Kevin De Bruyne or Mohamed Salah.

6) Danny Drinkwater (Chelsea)

Given that Chelsea sold Nemanja Matic, this really isn’t an adequate job at replacing him.

Danny Drinkwater looked a decent enough player at Leicester City, but you wouldn’t really count him as among the biggest stars of that 2015/16 title-winning side.

This surprise signing certainly hasn’t gone well and few would be surprised if he were axed straight away this summer.

5) Ross Barkley (Chelsea)

A truly bizarre signing, Ross Barkley was signed from Everton despite not playing a single game for them this season due to injury.

We’ve not seen much of the England international since his switch to Stamford Bridge, and it’s hard to see a role for him in this side.

Next time, Chelsea, if Everton don’t want a player, he’s probably not going to be good enough for you. Just saying.

Alexandre Lacazette has struggled badly since joining Arsenal from Lyon

4) Alexandre Lacazette (Arsenal)

The latest of many good players to go backwards since joining Arsenal, Alexandre Lacazette is undoubtedly up there with the flops of the season.

The France international has just one goal in his last 13 appearances for the Gunners and it’s hard to see him recovering now that he’s got Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for competition.

3) Tiemoue Bakayoko (Chelsea)

What a mess. Around £40million spent on a player who looked pretty great at Monaco, but who has been shown up as being well out of his depth at Premier League level.

Chelsea have done a disastrous job of replacing Nemanja Matic in midfield, and you could argue Bakayoko is probably a downgrade on someone like Nathaniel Chalobah too.

Quite what went wrong at Chelsea this summer is beyond us, but it could cost Antonio Conte his job.

It’s not worked out for Alvaro Morata at Chelsea

2) Alvaro Morata (Chelsea)

The fourth Chelsea player on this list and surely the most disappointing of the lot is club record signing Alvaro Morata, who has looked like the next Fernando Torres for most of his time with the Blues so far.

The Spain international has just one goal in 2018 and is starting to show why he was only ever a squad player at previous club Real Madrid.

Given that Chelsea bizarrely axed one of the best strikers in Europe in Diego Costa last summer, Morata’s arrival looks all the more baffling and like a big, big mistake.

1) Alexis Sanchez (Manchester United)

There can only be one for first place and that’s Manchester United’s ill-thought-out January purchase of Alexis Sanchez.

The Chile international shone at Arsenal but his weaknesses showed as he sulked his way through the first half of this season.

Sanchez is now struggling to settle at all in a United shirt and it comes across more and more like the Red Devils just wanted the satisfaction of landing another big name, with the added bonus of not letting Pep Guardiola and Manchester City get him.
