Arsene Wenger’s best Arsenal wins: Manchester United title-clincher and Liverpool thriller battle it out for no.1

Today’s been all about Arsene Wenger as the long-serving Arsenal manager announced he’s finally set to step down at the end of this season.

After 22 years, the Frenchman will be making way for someone else to lead the Gunners, with many of the club’s fans barely old enough to remember the team without him.

He’s certainly brought a great amount to Arsenal, so we’ve put together his ten best wins for Gooners to get all nostalgic about on this emotional day…

10) AC Milan 0-2 Arsenal – 2008

Having drawn 0-0 in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie, few expected Arsenal to have it in them to grab something in the away game.

And yet, against the reigning European champions at the time, containing the likes of Andrea Pirlo and Kaka at their peak, Arsenal produced a fantastic display, with goals from Cesc Fabregas and Emmanuel Adebayor sending them through.

9) Inter Milan 1- 5 Arsenal – 2003

Another win at the San Siro, and this time it was an absolute thrashing as Arsenal ran riot against Inter Milan.

The Gunners made a dreadful start in the group stages that season, but this win put them back in contention to go through to the knockout stages and saw them produce some of their finest football.

Thierry Henry was in inspired form to score twice, including a stunning solo effort in which he turned Javier Zanetti into mincemeat.

8) Manchester United 0-1 Arsenal – 1998

A crucial win at Old Trafford that set Arsenal on their way to claiming the double in Wenger’s first season in charge.

Although the Gunners went into this game playing catch-up in the title race, by the end of it they were just six points behind Manchester United with three games in hand.

The rest is history. They overtook Sir Alex Ferguson’s side and Wenger won the first of many trophies in his glorious career in England.

7) Arsenal 2-1 Chelsea – 2017

Aaron Ramsey struck Arsenal’s winner in the 2017 FA Cup final

It may prove to be his last major trophy as Arsenal manager, and many felt at the time like Wenger may have been taking charge of his last game for the club.

Arsenal beat Chelsea 2-1 in last season’s FA Cup final to end what had been a disappointing season on a real high as they stunned the champions with a superb display.

In many ways, it would have been the ideal way for Wenger to bow out, but he signed a new contract days afterwards.

6) Arsenal 3-2 Hull City – 2014

An important win in Wenger’s Arsenal career as the Frenchman ended a torrid run of nine years without winning any silverware.

This thrilling contest also got off to the worst possible start for Arsenal as they found themselves 2-0 down to underdogs Hull after just eight minutes.

Goals from Santi Cazorla, Laurent Koscielny and Aaron Ramsey saw the north London giants come back, and it restored Wenger’s mojo a bit as he went on to win a further two FA Cups in the following three seasons.

5) Arsenal 4-0 Everton – 1998

The game that clinched Wenger’s first title, and what a show it was as Arsenal thrashed Everton 4-0 at Highbury.

Marc Overmars was electric that day and scored twice, but it was legendary captain Tony Adams who stole the show with a memorable fourth goal.

4) Real Madrid 0-1 Arsenal – 2006

One of Arsenal’s great European nights, Thierry Henry’s solo stunner gave them an unlikely victory away to Real Madrid as part of that 2006 run to the Champions League final.

Up against the Galacticos of Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo and Raul, Arsenal were deserved winners as they produced their usual slick football but with a defensive solidity to go with it.

Rarely have they looked such a complete side again and that win was a real highlight of a campaign that saw them come so close to winning the European Cup for the first time.

3) Arsenal 2-1 Barcelona – 2011

Andrey Arshavin struck a memorable Arsenal winner vs Barcelona

Another big night in the Champions League and almost certainly the best at the Emirates Stadium so far.

Arsenal welcomed Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona – one of the great club sides of the modern era – to London that evening and responded superbly after going a goal down and being outplayed.

Two superb efforts from Robin van Persie and Andrey Arshavin gave Arsenal a first leg victory and they were unlucky in the second leg to be ultimately knocked out again.

2) Arsenal 4-2 Liverpool – 2004

Who can forget Thierry Henry’s hat-trick against Liverpool?

One of the most important wins of that ‘Invincibles’ season, Arsenal twice went behind to Liverpool here following nightmare results against Manchester United in the FA Cup and Chelsea in the Champions League.

The modern Arsenal are known for crumbling in situations like this, but back then Thierry Henry saved the day with a hat-trick, including one of his best goals in an Arsenal shirt, to deliver a 4-2 win and ease the nerves over winning the title.

This performance perfectly summed up both the quality and spirit of that 2003/04 side.

1) Manchester United 0-1 Arsenal – 2002

Surely Wenger’s most satisfying hour – a 1-0 win against Manchester United to take the title off them in their own stadium in the 2001/02 season.

Having won the FA Cup days before, this secured the double for Arsenal and remarkably also ensured they went that whole season unbeaten away from home.

Sylvain Wiltord’s goal won it in the second half as Arsenal humiliated United and gave fans one of the most memorable nights in the club’s history.
