Manchester City close in on first January signing as transfer window opens

Manchester City are reportedly closing in on the transfer of highly-rated Espanyol youngster Oscar Tarensi, according to sources in Spain.

The 15-year-old, who can play defence, midfield or out wide, is rated as one of Espanyol’s most exciting talents, but is seemingly set to be the latest wonderkid to leave the La Liga club.

City seem poised to snap Tarensi up when he turns 16 on January 10 after following him for some time, according to Sport.

Pep Guardiola will likely be well aware of the best talent coming through back in La Liga, where he was a big success with Barcelona at the beginning of the decade.

City don’t have the best track record of using their young players, but there have been some signs of that changing in recent times, with Phil Foden gaining increasing first-team exposure during 2018.

Tarensi could do well to develop at City and make a first-team breakthrough in a couple of years if he continues along his current trajectory.

The January transfer window opens today and City could do with being busy this month after recently falling behind Liverpool in the Premier League title race.
