Liverpool ask Premier League for special permission ahead of 2023/24 campaign

Liverpool have made a request to the Premier League to play their first game of the 2023/24 season away from home due to the redevelopment of Anfield.

The expansion of the Anfield Road End is set to be complete for the start of the new campaign and it will see 7,000 extra seats added to the famous football ground. The stadium’s overall capacity will rise to around 61,000 which will provide the Merseyside club with a host of benefits.

Work on the stand will enter a crucial phase once Liverpool’s final home match of the season against Aston Villa has concluded on May 20. Following that date, the current roof of the Anfield Road End will be taken off and dismantled and the necessary safety checks will begin before the 23/24 season gets underway.

According to The Athletic, Liverpool officials believe playing their opening top-flight fixture away on the weekend of August 12 will give them sufficient leeway to get everything in place.

This is not an uncommon request as Liverpool have done it in the past as well as Real Madrid recently. The Reds will likely get a positive answer from the Premier League as the new-look Anfield gets ready to host its first match at the end of the year.
