Manchester United and City set for Wembley rematch 77 days after FA Cup final

Manchester United will face Manchester City at Wembley again this summer following the Red Devils’ victory in Saturday’s FA Cup final.

United beat City 2-1 thanks to first-half strikes by teenagers Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo.

An 87th-minute goal by Jeremy Doku set up a nervous finish but it was not enough to preserve City’s run of 35 games without a defeat in all competitions.

Saturday’s victory saw United qualify for next season’s UEFA Europa League.

It also meant that United will compete in the 2024 Community Shield game – against City.

That will take place back at Wembley on August 10 – 77 days on for this weekend’s FA Cup final.

City will be there as Premier League champions, while United qualified courtesy of their cup triumph.

Had City beaten United then they would instead have faced Arsenal – who came second in the Premier League – in next season’s Community Shield.

United have not featured in the Community Shield since 2016 when they beat Leicester City 2-1.

However, the Red Devils are still the most successful club in the history of the competition, having won it 21 times.

Most prolific FA Community Shield winners

  1. Manchester United – 21 titles
  2. Arsenal – 17 titles
  3. Liverpool – 16 titles
  4. Everton – 9 titles
  5. Tottenham – 7 titles
  6. Manchester City – 6 titles
